“I Had Nothing”: Mother Forced to Choose Between Abuse and Homelessness

“It was almost like…if you stay, your boys will someday do this. And your boys will never respect you, and they will never respect any woman.” Jordan Hedgecock, age 26, describes the moment she decided she could no longer stay in an abusive relationship. She was estranged from her family; and as the wife of a recently discharged military veteran with no local friends to turn to, she became homeless with her two young sons. Jordan shares her story with Tanya Mettlen, who supervises the Family Housing Network at Catholic Community Services.

This story was recorded in July 2014 in Tacoma, Wash., at Catholic Community Services of Western Washington. It was facilitated by Anna Berlanga of StoryCorps and produced by Tiana Quitugua of Seattle University.
